Blackfriars Bridge

Thames River traffic provides an active counterpoint to the massive buildings of the London skyline festooned with spidery cranes. I find this active sort of scene exciting to paint and I try to show that exhilaration in the handling of the paint.

This view is from Waterloo Bridge. My rather rough handling is intended to take out the detail and show the major players in this exciting scene. Once again working on a rough ground, I want a robust masculinity to be obvious.

London Stalls

Street markets are quite common in London. This one in the Soho section is an excellent example of the energy that develops when diverse ethnic people compete against the Del boys of south east London. These fellows are independent traders who buy and sell just about anything. This is the territory of EastEnders, the long running B.B.C. T.V. series.

Wellington Pub, London

This pub with its outdoor area is conveniently located across Lancaster Place from the Courtauld Institute of Art. I decided when we visited London in 2011 to make a point of being aware of London store fronts. A pub like this is an example of a staid, but up-market, meeting place.

Toward Parliament

Image Number:

This painting is based on a photo that I took from the Jubilee footbridge looking toward Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. I did dramatize the light effect on this scene of the Thames River in the heart of central London to create what I hope is a more effective and focused view. In this piece the wall of the embankment leads us toward the perpendicular gothic creation by Charles Barry assisted by Augustus Pugin. As I love architecture, Pugin is a favourite of mine.

Inviting

This romantic country cottage in Bedfordshire invites me to come in. I have focused on the door and slightly blurred the rest of the scene. We have been fortunate enough to rent cottages of this sort when we visit England.

Houghton House

Image Number:

Near Ampthill in Bedfordshire, England, this historic Jacobean house was supposedly the model for House Beautiful in Pilgrim's Progress. Sitting on the brow of a hill along an official walking trail, this house exudes a calm as it looks out over the farm fields with cattle and sheep.
