Florals

Greenhouse Flowers

Image Number:
PS175

Geraniums and forsythia make a colourful presentation in the greenhouse at the Bell Homestead in Brantford. I painted this piece on the spot.

This was a trial painting for PBS in Buffalo for a series that did not happen. As the mere "talent", as it is called in the T.V. business, I have no idea of why the series was not produced. In this business a person learns early on to try things, many of which never see the light of day.

Our Living Room

Image Number:

After running into the interior paintings of British painter, Sue Ryder, I was inspired to paint this view with Louie, our cat, lying curled up on the floor. I wanted to not only convey the facts but also make a pleasing picture. Domestic interiors offer many possibilities to develop an atmospheric picture.

It takes many attempts, at least for me, to develop an approach to a subject. I have talked to Sue several times and she warns me against trying to paint the entire room rather than just a corner or feature. Multiple light sources through lamplight add to the drama.

Two Bouquets of Flowers

The flowers are shown in a vase that was given to my late mother-in-law as a wedding present.

Dark Trillium

Image Number:
PS116

The subject of this painting for me is not the trillium but rather the light coming through the flower and leaves. Light has always been my concern in painting. Not a silvery, overall light, but rather directional light that creates a dramatic effect which certainly happens here.
