Amish Country Blind Line

Image Number:
PS186

This "no winter maintenance" road is one I discovered west of Milverton. Dirt roads like this are much used by the Amish as a way of staying off the normal higher traffic roads.

There are still quite a few unpaved and rarely maintained roads like this in the Amish area of Perth County. I thought this spring road with the subtle almost watercolour-like colours a subject that I couldn't pass. It is difficult for me to rein myself in when I drive through the countryside, any countryside, and see the many subjects just waiting for me to paint. The opportunities are endless.

Light on Branches

I am always fascinated by sunlight, this time on the random way that slivers of light graze branches in a forest.

I used an especially rough ground as I try to find the ideal amount of tooth to make for "a come and go light" ... broken light if you wish, not unlike the impressionists' approach. The impressionists broke the pigment and I am trying to get the ground to break the colour while at the same time layering the colours like in tapestry. I think this is quite successful.

Riverside House, Eden Mills

Image Number:
PS173

This stone house peeks out from behind a screen of trees along the Eramosa River in Eden Mills in this spring view.

During my time with the Grand Valley Conservation Foundation I had a good chance to poke along the waterways in this area. It was great fun and made me familiar with many small villages that I would never have visited.

Decorated

Image Number:
PS110

This old gent, a Canadian veteran of World War II, was part of our group as we visited Holland to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Canada's liberation of the Netherlands. Much decorated, this man, like so many others, is only recognized when he wears his medals.

Greenhouse Flowers

Image Number:

Geraniums and forsythia make a colourful presentation in the greenhouse at the Bell Homestead in Brantford. I painted this piece on the spot.

This was a trial painting for PBS in Buffalo for a series that did not happen. As the mere "talent", as it is called in the T.V. business, I have no idea of why the series was not produced. In this business a person learns early on to try things, many of which never see the light of day.

Resting Boats

Image Number:

Pulled up to this house in a Newfoundland village, these small boats are ready to go back in the sea.

All across Newfoundland, I found delightfully coloured boats and houses. This view, which is not uncommon in the small villages, provides instant design possibilities. This sketch uses acrylic with grease pencil on pastel paper.

Private Road, Bella Lake

Image Number:
PS162

Bella Lake is located just off Billie Bear Road, northeast of Huntsville, Ontario. Private lanes lead off the road to cottages near the water and offer such a wonderful chance to imagine what's at the other end.

My long-time friend, Mike Roth, has introduced me to this area which is near his cottage. Almost all of my Muskoka paintings result from visits to Mike and his bride, Melodie.
